FILM CHALLENGE: 192) Easy A

192) Easy A

Director: Will Gluck
Year: 2010

Plot Summary: After a little white lie about losing her virginity gets out, a clean cut high school girl sees her life paralleling Hester Prynne's in "The Scarlet Letter," which she is currently studying in school - until she decides to use the rumor mill to advance her social and financial standing.

It's hard to deny that Easy A, an American comedy about a clean-cut high school girl who uses the school's rumour mill to advance her popularity, is a well-written comedy. With an off-beat and original narrative alongside some fast, witty dialogue it will leave you wondering where the 90 minutes went and smiling from start to finish.

However, that doesn't necessarily make Easy A fantastic by any means.

Firstly, because it doesn't seem to have a point to make or something to say other than adding some much needed originality to such a tired genre. The narrative builds up to some moral climax in which Olive discovers that honesty and being herself is in fact the best way to succeed in high school life, yet it never seems to reach there.

Which brings me on to the second problem: The ending. For a comedy that bursts with new ideas it finishes with the typical romantic get-together, letting the entire film down.

Lastly, there is so much of the story that only serves the purpose of comic relief. The scenes with her parents, Rosemary and Dill, are wonderful to watch and really capture a modern American household, but they are about as essential to the plot as Jedward are to the music industry.

Nevertheless, as far as Easy A goes it is a fun movie and stands head and shoulders above any other high school comedy that has been released so far this year. There is still, however, lots of room for improvement in the genre.
